Overwintering is often the most challenging part of growing a lemon tree in a climate with frost, short days or centrally heated rooms. The goal is not simply to keep the plant warm, but to balance temperature, light, moisture and humidity. A cool tree needs less water and nutrition, while a warm tree requires strong light to support continued metabolism. Stable conditions are far safer than frequent movement between contrasting environments.
Preparing the tree before winter
Begin winter preparation before the first damaging frost is forecast. Examine the plant closely for scale insects, mealybugs, spider mites and aphids. Treating a minor infestation outdoors is easier than dealing with rapidly multiplying pests indoors. Remove fallen leaves and dead twigs that could shelter insects or fungal spores.
Reduce feeding gradually as autumn light levels decline. Late applications of nitrogen can encourage soft shoots that are vulnerable to cold and indoor stress. The tree should enter winter with mature, firm growth rather than a flush of tender foliage. Continue watering as required, but allow the surface to dry slightly between applications.
Clean the pot and inspect the drainage holes before relocation. Slugs, ants and other organisms may hide beneath the container or inside the drainage area. Washing the outer surface reduces the amount of soil and debris carried indoors. A wheeled stand can make a large specimen easier to move and inspect.
Do not make drastic pruning cuts immediately before winter unless damaged branches must be removed. Heavy pruning reduces leaf area and may stimulate new growth at an unsuitable time. A light thinning of crowded or pest-infested shoots is sufficient. Structural pruning is better delayed until growth is ready to resume.

Choosing an overwintering environment
A cool, bright and frost-free space is ideal for most lemon trees. An unheated conservatory, enclosed porch or bright stairwell may provide suitable conditions. The room should remain above damaging temperatures but cool enough to slow growth. Natural light must still reach the foliage for several hours each day.
Warm living rooms can be used, although they create different demands. High temperature keeps the leaves physiologically active even when winter sunlight is weak. Water demand falls significantly in a cool winter position. Check the compost below the surface before irrigating and use enough water to moisten the root ball evenly. Empty drainage trays afterwards. Small, frequent splashes create an uneven root environment and should be avoided.

Do not move the lemon tree outdoors permanently at the first mild spell. Spring weather can change abruptly, and one cold night may damage months of protected growth. Wait until the risk of frost has passed or be prepared to bring the tree back under cover. Night temperatures are more important than a single warm afternoon.
Acclimatise the foliage gradually to direct sunlight. Begin in a bright, sheltered position with filtered light or limited morning sun. Increase exposure over one to two weeks. Leaves formed indoors are thinner and can scorch badly if placed immediately in intense sunlight.
Resume feeding only when active growth is visible and root-zone temperatures have risen. Increase watering gradually as evaporation and growth accelerate. Inspect the tree again for pests because hidden populations can expand rapidly in spring warmth. Remove any dead twigs once the boundary between living and damaged wood becomes clear.
Repotting can be carried out after the tree has adjusted and begun growing. Avoid combining severe root disturbance, intense sunlight and strong fertiliser on the same day. Introducing changes in stages allows the plant to recover more predictably. A well-managed spring transition often determines the quality of the entire growing season.
