Lemon trees can recover from many pest and disease problems when the symptoms are recognised early and the growing conditions are corrected. Weak light, stagnant air, excessive moisture and nutritional stress often make infestations more severe. Regular inspection is therefore one of the most effective forms of protection. Looking beneath leaves, along twigs and around the root collar can reveal trouble before extensive damage occurs.
Sap-feeding pests on leaves and shoots
Aphids gather mainly on soft new shoots, flower stems and the undersides of young leaves. They remove sap and cause tender growth to curl or distort. Sticky honeydew may coat the foliage and later support the development of black sooty mould. Ant activity around the tree can also indicate an aphid colony.
Small infestations can often be removed with a firm stream of water or by wiping affected shoots. Heavily distorted tips may be pruned off and discarded. Insecticidal soap or horticultural oil can be used according to label directions when physical removal is insufficient. Coverage must reach the lower leaf surfaces, where aphids frequently hide.
Whiteflies are tiny pale insects that fly from the plant when the foliage is disturbed. Their immature stages remain attached beneath the leaves and feed continuously. Yellowing, weakness and sticky deposits may develop during a heavy infestation. Warm indoor conditions can allow several generations to overlap.
Spider mites thrive in hot, dry environments and are especially troublesome during indoor overwintering. Their feeding produces fine pale speckling, and delicate webbing may appear between leaves and stems. Increasing humidity moderately and washing the foliage can slow their development. Repeated treatment is usually necessary because eggs may survive the first application.

Scale insects and mealybugs
Scale insects appear as small brown, grey or pale bumps attached to stems and leaves. They are easily mistaken for part of the bark because adult stages move very little. Feeding weakens the plant and produces sticky honeydew. A dense population may cause leaf yellowing, shoot decline and poor flowering.
Individual scale insects can be removed with a soft brush or cotton pad. The entire plant should then be inspected because young stages are much harder to see. Sooty mould forms a dark coating on leaves and twigs where honeydew-producing insects are active. The fungus does not usually invade healthy tissue, but the coating reduces light reaching the leaf. Fruit drop may be caused by natural thinning, inadequate pollination or sudden stress. Very young trees commonly discard more fruit than mature specimens. Dry compost during flowering and rapid temperature changes increase losses. Stable moisture, good light and balanced nutrition support retention without forcing the tree to carry an excessive crop.
Integrated prevention and long-term control
Quarantine every new citrus plant before placing it near established specimens. Inspect the undersides of leaves, branch junctions and the compost surface during this period. Many pests are introduced on apparently healthy nursery plants. Early isolation is far easier than controlling an infestation across an entire collection.
Maintain an open canopy and remove dead material promptly. Clean, sharp tools create wounds that close more effectively than ragged cuts. Disinfect pruning equipment after working on suspicious tissue. Fallen leaves, mummified fruit and pruned pest-infested shoots should not remain around the tree.
Avoid routine pesticide use when no pest is present. Unnecessary treatments may harm beneficial insects and allow resistant populations to develop. Begin with physical removal and environmental correction whenever practical. Choose products specifically approved for citrus or edible crops and follow all harvest restrictions.
Record recurring problems and the conditions in which they appear. A yearly spider-mite outbreak, for example, may reveal that the winter room is consistently too dry. Repeated root trouble suggests that the growing medium, pot size or watering method needs revision. Prevention becomes much more effective when management addresses the cause rather than only the visible symptom.
